2021-2022 RECRUITMENT: Lecteur/Lectrice/Maître de Langue

Coucou ! I have been on a major research kick lately to find job postings for those interested in Lecteur/Lectrice/MDL positions. I don’t usually do this, but as I haven’t seen these jobs compiled in one spot for the 2021-22 academic year, I will add them to my blog and continually update this post as I find new ones. For more information about these jobs, you can check out my 2018 blog post here, or find several of the countless other posts available online. You’re also welcome to join our Facebook community on the “Lecteurs & Lectrices de Langues en France” page.

If you’re interested in official legal jargon, feel free to read through the specifications of these jobs here: “Décret n°87-754 du 14 septembre 1987 relatif au recrutement de lecteurs de langue étrangère et de maîtres de langue étrangère dans les établissements publics d’enseignement supérieur relevant du ministre chargé de l’enseignement supérieur.” It’s unnecessary, though, as universities will share their recruitment requirements.

A Note on Requirements: France has some odd hang ups when it comes to formation, so you might run into some sticky territory when it comes to a school’s education prerequisite. According to the décret, to be a MDL you need an M2 (Bac+5), or a completed master’s degree. To be a lecteur/lectrice, you need “une année d’études accomplie avec succès après l’obtention d’un titre ou d’un diplôme français ou étranger d’un niveau équivalent à celui du diplôme national de licence.” This is where things get confusing. Another way to say this is Bac + 4, which for the French (who have 3 year undergraduate programs), includes one year of a master’s degree (M1). Some schools equate a U.S. bachelor’s with a Bac + 3 even if was four years, but some accept a U.S. degree as a Bac + 4. When in doubt, email them and ask. The best is when it’s clearly stated on the job posting, but that’s not common. Regarding the language requirement, you do not have to be a native speaker of the language, but you must speak the language as well as your mother tongue. You can certainly get hired with a C2 in the target language (typically English), even if you weren’t speaking it at birth (nobody can really speak at birth, but you know what I mean…).

Pay: Around 1200 euros/month net as a lecteur/lectrice, and around 1500 euros/month net as a MDL. The salary is for 12 months and includes school vacations.

OK, now for the part you’ve been waiting for… THE JOB ANNOUNCEMENTS! The posts from each school are hyperlinked in the “Job/Language(s)” section for each establishment below.

Sorry for any grammatical errors or weird sentences- it’s far past my bedtime. But I was laying awake, thinking of how I could organize the many links I’ve dropped in various Facebook groups, and got up to write this. Don’t hesitate to write a comment if you see any other job announcements come up! I will gladly add it to this post. And if you are currently working/have worked at one of these universities, feel free to share your social media handle or contact information if you’d welcome communication from current applicants. Good luck to everybody applying!

  1. Thanks for your post. Really helpful to have everything summarised in one place. I just wondered whether all posts are a similar number of hours, and if so, how many? Most don’t state the number of weekly hours.

    1. Hi Chris! Thanks for reading. There is a set minimum number of instructional hours for the year (192 of TD for MdL and 300 TP- less if doing TD- for Lecteurs). The weekly hours vary depending on the length of the semester. It’s a very manageable workload in either case, I’d say!

      1. Thanks for your reply, Emily. If the work is manageable, is it potentially possible to combine with part-time freelance work?

      2. Oh gosh, I’m so sorry I missed your reply! I’d say the work is definitely manageable, but freelance work is not allowed on certain visas. If you are European, you’re in the clear and can open a micro-entreprise, to maintain your freelance business. If you come to France on a work visa, unfortunately you cannot set up a micro-entreprise. So I suppose you could freelance, but it would not be above board, which has the potential to pose problems.
